5 Best Rated Walk-In Shower Companies in Friendswood, TX, Ranked for Homeowners Rebuilding a Bathroom That Took Water

If you are comparing the best rated walk in shower companies Friendswood homeowners actually hire, the question underneath your search is probably not about tile. It is whether the company you call will open the wall, read what is behind it, and tell you the truth.

Friendswood sits on Clear Creek. Hurricane Harvey damaged 2,838 buildings inside the city in August 2017, and 2,410 of them were single family homes. City Public Works staff went out afterward and measured the water line on the outside of every damaged structure above slab level, which means Friendswood has better data on how deep the water got than almost any city in the region.

That data is why this page is written the way it is. A shower rebuild in this city is not a surface project. It is the one moment you get to look inside a wall that has been closed since 2018, and this ranking is published by Cascade Showerworks with the criteria printed below so you can check us against everyone else on it.

How We Ranked the Walk-In Shower Companies Serving Friendswood

Friendswood is a city where roughly a third of the homes took water in a single storm, and where a very large share of the bathrooms in it were repaired fast, by whoever was available, during the worst contractor shortage the Houston region has ever had. We weighted the criteria below toward the things that decide whether a shower rebuild here fixes the room or reseals a problem: a named waterproofing assembly, a crew that does this work daily and can read a wall, a flat written price that survives what demolition finds, and a warranty that means something eight years from now.

This ranking is published by Cascade Showerworks. We are on the list, and we are first on it, so the fair thing to do is show you exactly what we measured and let you check every claim yourself. Every company below is a real business with a verified address, phone number, and Google Business Profile linked in its section.

A ranking methodology graphic for the five best rated walk-in shower companies serving the Houston Heights, Texas, showing eight scored criteria laid out as labeled columns: shower specialization, installer model, waterproofing system, install timeline, pricing transparency, warranty terms, local accountability and verified public rating. The panel states clearly that Cascade Showerworks publishes this Houston Heights ranking and discloses its own first place position on it.

This ranking is published by Cascade Showerworks. We are on the list, and we are first on it, so the fair thing to do is show you exactly what we measured and let you check every claim yourself. Every company below is a real business with a verified address, phone number, and Google Business Profile linked in its section.

What We Measured

  • Shower specialization
How much of the company's work is showers rather than kitchens, floors, and whole-bath gut jobs
  • Installer model
Certified W2 employees who set showers daily versus rotating subcontract crews
  • Waterproofing system
A named, tested waterproofing assembly rather than "we seal it well"
  • Install timeline
Days the bathroom is out of service, and whether the quoted timeline is contractual
  • Pricing transparency
One flat written number before demolition versus an estimate that moves
  • Warranty
Length, what it actually covers, and whether it transfers to the next owner
  • Local accountability
Locally owned and reachable versus a franchise territory or a call center
  • Public rating
Google rating and review volume, verified at the time of writing

We did not rank on advertising spend, showroom size, or how many services a company offers. A walk-in shower is a waterproofing project with glass on it, and the companies that do it best are the ones that do it most.

The Five, Side by Side

The 5 Best Rated Walk-In Shower Companies in Friendswood, Side by Side

All five of these are real businesses with verified phone numbers, and all five will drive to Friendswood. They do not do the same job, and on a flood-rebuilt bathroom that difference gets expensive. Two of them build showers as a specialty. Two are dealer or franchise operations built around a manufactured acrylic system. One is a full bathroom remodeler that also sells showers. Which one is correct for you depends almost entirely on whether your bathroom needs to be opened or only resurfaced.

A five column comparison chart of the best rated walk-in shower companies serving Memorial, Texas, lining up Cascade Showerworks, Simplicity Bath and Shower, Re-Bath Houston, Luxury Bath of Houston and EZ Bath against shower specialization, crew model, willingness to assess original 1960s plumbing, typical timeline and warranty structure. The chart helps Memorial homeowners searching for walk in shower companies near me see the structural differences before booking three in-home estimates.

Friendswood · Post-Harvey

The Post-Harvey Friendswood Bathroom: Water That Dried and Water That Has to Be Opened Up

Hurricane Harvey damaged 2,838 buildings in Friendswood. Single family homes accounted for 2,410 of them, multi-family for 359, and commercial for 67.

The city broke that damage into four assessment levels: 472 units affected, 941 minor, 1,075 major, and 350 destroyed. The 350 destroyed homes are not the ones this section is about. The 1,413 in the affected and minor bands are.

A cutaway diagram of a Friendswood, Texas bathroom wet wall after flood damage, showing the flood water line marked at 22 inches above the slab, capillary wicking rising in the paper faced gypsum well above that line, a saturated bottom plate on the slab, insulation still damp inside the stud bay, and intact ceramic tile left in place over the failed backer. The graphic explains what a cosmetic 2018 repair covered up in a Clear Creek area home.

472 Affected
941 Minor
1,075 Major

The Depth Is the Whole Story

City Public Works staff did not enter the damaged houses. They measured water marks on the outside of each structure above slab level, and the city considers that data accurate within a few inches either way. That produced the only honest thing anybody has about what happened inside those walls: how high the water got.

More than half of the damaged units in Friendswood, 1,614 of 2,838, took 24 inches or less. That number is the reason this city has a bathroom problem eight years later.

At 24 inches, the water never reaches the shower valve. It never reaches most of the tile. It wets the tub apron, the vanity toe kick, the bottom plate, the insulation at the base of the stud bay and the bottom two feet of whatever is behind your surround. Then it goes down, and the room looks almost fine.

Gypsum Wicks Higher Than the Water Line

Paper-faced gypsum pulls water upward by capillary action. The visible line on the wall is where the water stopped standing, not where the wall stopped getting wet, and restoration practice is to cut a set distance above the mark rather than at it.

That is why the standard flood cut in 2017 was made at 2 feet or 4 feet, above the line and on a clean seam. In most rooms of the house that worked. In the bathroom it frequently did not, and the reason is entirely mechanical.

Why the Bathroom Is the Room Most Likely to Be Hiding Something

A flood cut is easy in a bedroom. You pull baseboard, snap a line, cut, and the wall comes out in sheets. In a bathroom the bottom two feet of the wet wall is behind a tub, behind a tile surround, or behind an alcove that has a plumbing wall in it.

In 2018, with every crew in the region booked, the fast decision was made constantly: the tile is intact, the tub is heavy, the water only came up 20 inches, cut the drywall on the dry side of the wall and leave the wet wall alone. The room passed a visual inspection and the homeowner moved back in.

The material that stayed is the material that matters. Paper-faced backer behind tile, batt insulation in a closed bay, a bottom plate on a slab that never got airflow, and a mortar bed that holds water like a sponge.

What a Rushed 2018 Bathroom Rebuild Usually Looks Like

  • Tile left in place over unverified backer, because removing intact tile costs a day and nobody had a day in 2018
  • A flood cut that stopped at the tub, leaving the one stud bay in the room that stayed wet the longest completely untouched
  • Paper-faced gypsum used as tile backer in a wet area, which was already the wrong material and is a much worse one after a flood
  • No moisture verification before closing, meaning the wall was buttoned up on a schedule rather than on a reading
  • Insulation left in a closed bay where it never dried, because a stud bay behind tile has no airflow path at all
  • A new pan set on an old mortar bed that was saturated, on the reasonable-sounding logic that concrete does not rot
  • No documentation of any of it, so the next owner and the next contractor both start from zero

How to Inspect Your Own Bathroom Before You Call Anybody

You can do most of this yourself in twenty minutes with a flashlight and your hands. None of it is proof, and all of it is worth knowing before three companies quote your bathroom.

  • Tap the tile with a knuckle or a coin across the whole surround. Solid tile rings tight. Debonded tile over failed backer sounds hollow and drummy, and the hollow zone usually starts low and spreads upward
  • Look at the grout and caulk line where the tub apron meets the floor. Persistent staining, a soft caulk bead, or a gap that keeps reopening after you recaulk it means movement or moisture underneath
  • Press the bottom 18 inches of the wall behind and beside the tub. Sound gypsum is rigid. Anything that gives, flexes, or feels warm and papery is not intact
  • Get a moisture meter reading and compare it to a known dry wall in the same house. The absolute number matters less than the difference between the wet wall and an interior wall on the far side of the house at the same height
  • Smell the room after it has been closed up for a day. A musty odor that clears when you open the door and returns when you close it is coming from something in the assembly, not from the towels
  • Look at the base of the door casing and the toe kick. Swelling, paint blistering low and only low, or a casing that was replaced when nothing else in the room was, all point at a water line
  • Pull the tub or shower access panel if there is one. In a lot of Friendswood homes there is one in the adjoining closet, and it is a free look at the wet wall from behind

Inspection Findings and What Each One Usually Means

What You Find What It Usually Indicates What It Means for a Shower Rebuild
Hollow sound over a wide low area of tile
Backer failure or adhesive bond loss behind the tile
The surround comes out, not off. Price a rebuild, not a resurface
Elevated meter reading versus a dry reference wall
Retained moisture or an active leak in the assembly
Find the source before anybody sells you a finish product
Musty odor that returns when the room is closed
Microbial growth somewhere in a closed cavity
Assessment before demolition, and possibly a licensed remediator
Caulk at the tub apron that keeps failing
Movement, a wet substrate, or both
The pan and the framing under it are the real question
Blistered paint only in the bottom foot of the wall
A historic water line the repair covered rather than removed
Expect the flood cut to have stopped short
Replaced door casing with original everything else
A 2017 or 2018 partial repair
Ask the seller or your own records how far the repair went
Soft or springy floor at the shower threshold
Substrate or subfloor damage at the wettest point in the room
Open it. This is not a cosmetic finding
Nothing at all across every check
A bathroom that was above the water line or fully rebuilt
A normal shower project, priced normally

We will open the wall, take readings, and show you what is actually there before you commit.

What They Do

Cascade Showerworks installs showers and nothing else. No vanities, no flooring, no kitchens, no whole-bath gut jobs. Tub to shower conversions, walk-in shower replacements, curbless and barrier-free showers, glass enclosures, and the framing, waterproofing and drain work underneath all of it.

The systems are Samuel Mueller and Transolid solid surface and cast acrylic, in three series with published price bands: Pioneer at $9,200 to $14,400, BelAir at $11,800 to $17,600, and Luxura at $14,400 to $21,900. Those numbers are printed on the company website, which is not something most walk in shower companies near me searches will turn up.

Who They Are Right For

The Friendswood homeowner whose shower is the last unresolved room from a flood repair, or the one who never flooded and simply wants the shower itself done correctly and done once. In both cases the vanity and the floor are usually fine and the wet wall is not.

It is also the right call when you want somebody to actually look before quoting. A shower-only company has to be able to tell you what a moisture reading on your wet wall means, because there is no cabinetry or flooring markup to hide a wrong answer behind.

How They Install

Certified W2 employees, not rotating subcontractors, with lead installers carrying Samuel Mueller certification identification. The standard shower install runs one day, roughly 7:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening, with the shower usable after the silicone cures overnight.

A rebuild that turns up wet framing, failed backer or mold is quoted separately and in writing rather than folded into a one-day promise that cannot survive it. Remediation, drying and framing repair are their own line items with their own schedule.

Verified Credentials

Credential What It Means on a Friendswood Shower
Shower-only specialist, not a general remodeler taking shower work between kitchens Every crew day is a shower day — the wall assembly answer comes from repetition, not from a subcontractor briefed that morning
Samuel Mueller certified installers carrying certification identification on the job A named, tested waterproofing assembly rather than a promise to seal it well
Certified W2 crews, never rotating subcontract labor The same people who measured your floor are the ones building on it
A+ BBB rated and 4.9 star Google rated across 30-plus verified reviews Verify it live before you sign, the same way you should verify everyone on this page

Lifetime transferable warranty that follows the house to the next owner It follows the house, which matters in Friendswood where homeowners invest heavily in long-term renovations

The Caveat

If you want your vanity, mirror, lighting, tile floor and closet done at the same time, Cascade is not the whole answer. They will build the shower and coordinate around your other trades, but you will be hiring a second contractor for the rest of the room.

Cascade is also not a mold remediation firm. In Texas that is a separately licensed trade above a defined threshold, and a shower company that claims otherwise is telling you something about itself.

Why It Ranks First

Shower-only specialization. Certified W2 crews. A named waterproofing assembly. A one-day install window scheduled around City of Friendswood inspections. A flat written price. A lifetime transferable warranty. The criteria line up because the company does one thing, repeatedly.

What They Do

Simplicity Bath & Shower works out of Katy and covers greater Houston. The company builds solid surface showers, custom showers, tub to shower conversions, walk-in tubs, and complete bathroom remodels including cabinets, vanities and countertops.

They also market accessible and aging-in-place work as a stated specialty, which matters in a city where a meaningful share of the flood repairs from 2018 are now being redone by owners who have decided to stay put rather than sell.

Who They Are Right For

The Friendswood homeowner who wants the shower and the rest of the bathroom handled under one contract, and who prefers a grout-free solid surface finish over tile. Simplicity states on its own website that it works from upfront pricing without a high-pressure sales presentation, which is not universal in this category.

They are a reasonable call for a shower remodel Friendswood TX project where the scope has already crept past the shower into the vanity wall, which is common when a flood cut was made across the whole room.

How They Install

In-house teams on a project schedule rather than a fixed one-day model. Timeline depends on scope, and a full bath remodel through Simplicity will run considerably longer than a shower swap. The company states more than twenty years in the remodeling industry.

The Caveat

The drive matters more than people expect. Katy to Friendswood is a cross-metro run of roughly fifty miles, and a company headquartered west of the Grand Parkway is scheduling your Friendswood inspection windows around that trip.

They also cover a wider service menu than a shower specialist, so the depth of experience on a flood-damaged wet wall specifically is a question worth asking directly at the estimate.

When This Is the Right Call

If the scope has crept past the shower into the vanity wall, countertop, or whole-room trim, a design-build company managing all of it has a real coordination advantage over multiple trades.

What They Do

Re-Bath is a national bathroom remodeling franchise, and the Houston location operates out of North Sam Houston Parkway West. The scope is the whole bathroom: tub to shower conversions, shower and tub replacements, accessible and ADA-oriented bathrooms, walk-in tubs, flooring, vanities and lighting.

The company runs a design center model with in-house designers and its own product lines, so selections happen in a showroom rather than out of a sample case in your living room.

Who They Are Right For

A Friendswood homeowner replacing an entire dated or flood-repaired bathroom in one contract with one point of accountability, who values a showroom selection process and a national warranty structure over a local specialist relationship.

If your 1970s hall bath was cut open in 2017 and patched back together, and the whole room now needs replacing rather than the shower alone, this model is built for exactly that job.

How They Install

Re-Bath advertises most standard bathroom remodels completing in roughly three to five days using its proprietary installation process and product system, with installation handled by franchise-managed crews and licensed trades.

The Caveat

Franchise means the sign is national and the crew is local, and the crew is the part that installs your shower. Ask who specifically is doing the work, whether they are employees of the franchise, and how a warranty claim gets routed two years from now.

A standard product-system scope also assumes the substrate it lands on is sound. On a Friendswood bathroom with flood history, make sure the contract says what happens when it is not, and who prices that.

The Full-Bath Advantage

If the entire hall bath needs replacing after years of patch repairs — flooring, vanity, fixtures, lighting and the shower — one company managing all of it has a real coordination advantage over four trades with you as the general contractor.

What They Do

Luxury Bath of Houston, formerly Bath Planet of Greater Houston, is a dealer in a national acrylic bath system network serving the Houston market. The product line covers replacement tubs, shower systems, walk-in tubs, tub to shower conversions and barrier-free bases, all built around molded acrylic warranted not to crack, chip or fade.

The company does not publish a street address for its Houston operation, so treat it as a service-area dealer rather than a showroom you can walk into, and confirm where the crew dispatches from before you sign.

Who They Are Right For

The tub to shower conversion Friendswood homeowner who wants a guest bath or a rental property handled quickly, cleanly, and inside the footprint that already exists. Acrylic has no grout, it wipes clean, and it goes in fast.

It is also a fair option for an aging-in-place upgrade where a low threshold base and a grab bar solve the problem, in a bathroom you already know is dry behind the surface.

How They Install

The system is designed for a one-day installation in an existing opening, using dealer installation crews. The dealer network model means each location is independently owned and operated, so the install experience is a local one under a national brand.

The Caveat

An acrylic system is built to fit the opening you have. That is the entire value proposition and also the limit. In a Friendswood bathroom with flood history, the opening you have may be sitting on framing nobody has looked at since 2018, and a fast system install over a compromised substrate is the exact failure this page exists to warn about.

Ask directly what happens if the crew opens the wall and finds wet or damaged framing, and get the answer in the contract rather than in conversation.

When Acrylic Makes Sense

For a Friendswood guest bath or rental property where the existing footprint works and speed matters, a fitted acrylic system is a sensible and well-proven answer. No grout to maintain, one-day install, and a defined warranty on the product.

What They Do

EZ Bath is a family-owned bathroom remodeling company based in Tomball, covering the greater Houston metro. The work is full bathroom remodels, tub to shower conversions, shower remodels, walk-in tubs, bathtub work and vanities. The company publishes completed project pages including bathroom remodels in Friendswood.

EZ Bath states on its own site that it builds with named product partners including Onyx Collection solid surface, Kerdi waterproofing, Delta fixtures and Bishop cabinets, which is more supply chain transparency than most companies in this category publish.

Who They Are Right For

A homeowner who wants a bathroom done quickly by a small family-run operation and cares more about turnaround and cost than about a shower specialist relationship. EZ Bath advertises a compressed schedule that gets a standard conversion done within the same week.

How They Install

In-house crews on a tight multi-day schedule, with a limited warranty on labor and installation layered under the manufacturer warranties from its product partners.

The Caveat

Tomball to Friendswood is the longest commute on this list, roughly fifty miles across the entire metro, and Friendswood inspections have to be requested by phone before 5 pm the day before they happen.

The fast-turnaround model is also built around bathrooms that do not surprise anybody. A rebuild that turns up mold or rotted framing does not compress, and it should be priced separately when it appears.

The Named-Partner Advantage

Publishing product partners before the contract is signed is a meaningful gesture of transparency. Kerdi waterproofing named on the website is a more specific answer than "we use premium materials."

Friendswood · Mold behind the wall

Mold Behind a Shower Wall: How Fast It Starts, What It Costs, and What Texas Requires

This is the part of a post-flood shower rebuild that people are most afraid of and least informed about. The numbers are not mysterious.

A Friendswood bathroom wet wall opened to the studs during a shower rebuild, showing dark microbial growth on the back face of removed gypsum backer, damp batt insulation being bagged, and a technician holding a moisture meter against a stud. The image shows Clear Creek area homeowners what mold behind a tile surround actually looks like when a flood repaired bathroom is finally opened, and why Texas licenses remediation above a defined square footage.
EPA 24–48 hr window Texas 25 sq ft rule

The 24 to 48 Hour Window

24–48 hours to dry

The EPA states that if wet or damp materials are dried within 24 to 48 hours after a leak or spill, in most cases mold will not grow. That window is the entire game, and it is also the window that a closed stud bay behind a tile surround cannot meet.

A bedroom wall that got cut open and had air movers on it for four days dried. A bathroom wet wall that stayed closed behind tile did not, and there was no realistic path for it to dry, because the only two faces of that cavity are tile on one side and gypsum on the other.

The EPA also puts the target for indoor humidity below 60 percent relative humidity, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. A closed bathroom in Friendswood in August is not that room, and neither is a stud bay with no airflow.

The Square Footage Thresholds That Change Who Does the Work

Two different numbers matter here, and they are not the same number.

EPA · homeowner guidance < 10 sq ft

The EPA guidance for homeowners is that if the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet, roughly a 3 foot by 3 foot patch, most people can handle the cleanup themselves, and that a contractor should be brought in when there has been a lot of water damage or growth exceeds that area.

Texas · who may be paid 25 sq ft

Texas law is separate and stricter about who may be paid to do it. Under Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1958, mold remediation on a project with a total surface area of 25 contiguous square feet or more requires a licensed mold remediator, with limited exemptions for owners and tenants working on their own property.

When a licensed remediator completes the work, Chapter 1958 requires that the property owner be given a certificate of mold remediation within 10 days of completion.

That certificate is not paperwork you file and forget. A seller has to disclose a copy of each certificate issued for the property during the five years preceding a sale, which means a properly documented remediation becomes part of your disclosure history and, handled correctly, part of your defense rather than a liability.

What It Actually Costs

Remediation is priced by area and by how much has to come out. Industry cost data puts professional mold remediation at roughly $10 to $30 per square foot of affected area, with a national average near $3,500 and most projects landing between $1,500 and $9,000.

Location changes the number more than anything else. A surface bathroom job runs roughly $500 to $1,500. Work behind walls runs roughly $1,000 to $12,000, because porous material has to be removed and replaced rather than cleaned.

An independent mold inspection by an accredited assessor runs roughly $450 to $800 and is a separate engagement from the remediation. Some remediation companies waive the inspection fee if you hire them, which is convenient and is also worth thinking about.

Scope Typical Range Notes

How a Shower Company Should Handle This

A shower specialist is not a mold remediator

In Texas above 25 contiguous square feet it legally cannot be one without the license. What a good shower company does is stop, document, tell you what it found, and hold the schedule while the right trade does the right work.

What a bad one does is keep going

Because the crew is on site and the base is on the truck. That decision is invisible on the day it is made and expensive for the next ten years.

The Insurance Path on a Friendswood Shower Rebuild, Explained Plainly

Nothing in this section is insurance advice, and nobody at a shower company is qualified to give you any. What follows is how the process works, so you are not learning it during demolition.

A Friendswood homeowner photographing a flood damaged bathroom wall with a phone before demolition begins, with a tape measure held against the water line, an open claim file and receipts on the vanity, and a contractor scope document beside an adjuster estimate on the counter. The image shows Clear Creek area homeowners why documentation before demolition matters and how an adjuster scope and a contractor scope are two different documents on a shower rebuild.
Document first Two scopes, two jobs

Not insurance advice. Nothing in this section is insurance advice, and nobody at a shower company is qualified to give you any. What follows is how the process works, so you are not learning it during demolition.

01

Your Carrier Decides Coverage, and Nobody Else Does

Not your contractor, not a restoration company that shows up in your driveway, not this page. A contractor can tell you what a repair requires. Only the carrier can tell you what your policy covers, and only your policy language and your adjuster determine that.

Be careful with anybody who tells you at the estimate what your insurance will pay. They are describing an outcome they do not control, and that conversation has a long history in this region.

02

Flood Is a Separate Policy From Homeowners

The City of Friendswood states it in plain language on its own flood insurance page: basic homeowner policies do not cover damage from floods. Flood coverage is a separate policy, and there is a 30 day waiting period before a new one takes effect.

That mattered enormously here. Of the roughly 3,000 Friendswood homes reported flooded in Harvey, about 2,000 were outside designated flood zones, which means a very large share of the owners rebuilding in 2018 were paying out of pocket, on a schedule set by their own savings.

It is worth understanding why so many of those repairs were fast and thin. It was not always a contractor cutting corners. It was frequently a homeowner with no flood policy trying to make a bathroom usable again.

Friendswood Participates in the Community Rating System

The city is an active participant in the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System, a voluntary program that rewards communities for enforcing higher standards with discounted flood premiums for eligible policyholders.

FEMA also moved to a new pricing methodology called Risk Rating 2.0 in 2022, which rates a property on its own characteristics rather than primarily on its position relative to a mapped flood zone. If your last real look at your flood premium was in 2018, that landscape has changed.

03

Document Before Demolition, Not During It

This is the single most useful thing on this page for a homeowner with an open or possible claim. Once a wall is in a dumpster it is gone, and the record of what was behind it is whatever you made before the sledgehammer.

  • Photograph and video the room before anything is removed, wide shots first so the location is obvious later, then close ups
  • Put a tape measure in the frame at the water line and at any stained or damaged area, so the photo carries a dimension and not just an impression
  • Photograph the wall again at each stage of demolition, with tile off, with gypsum out, and with the bay open and the framing exposed
  • Keep samples or keep the material where it is practical and safe to do so, and label where each one came from
  • Save every receipt and every written scope, including drying invoices, equipment rental, and any remediation certificate you were issued
  • Write down dates, because the sequence of when water entered, when drying started, and when the wall was closed is frequently the whole question
04

An Adjuster Scope and a Contractor Scope Are Different Documents

This confuses people badly, and the confusion is understandable, because both documents are line-item lists with dollar figures on them.

An adjuster scope is the carrier estimate of the covered loss, written on carrier estimating software using carrier pricing, describing what the carrier concluded happened. A contractor scope is what the work requires to be built correctly, to current code, and to a warranty the contractor will actually honor.

Those two documents can differ without anybody being dishonest. Code has changed since 2017. A carrier estimate covers restoring what was lost, and a homeowner frequently wants something better than what was lost. And a scope written from the outside of a closed wall cannot describe what turns up when the wall is opened.

The Texas Department of Insurance runs a consumer help line at 800-252-3439. The Texas Attorney General publishes contractor guidance that the City of Friendswood republishes on its own Harvey recovery pages, and takes contractor fraud reports at 800-621-0508.

Three things worth carrying into any estimate

That same city page repeats three things: get written estimates from at least three contractors including labor and materials, require general liability and workers compensation coverage, and avoid paying more than half the cost up front.

Permits, Floodplain Rules, and the Two-County Problem in Friendswood

Friendswood is an incorporated city that spans two counties, and that combination confuses almost everybody who has not worked here.

Your permit comes from the City of Friendswood no matter which county your house sits in. The county still matters, because it is where your deed and your appraised value live, and because a floodplain determination on your structure will be built from that record.

That matters on a rebuild for a specific reason. A bathroom repaired in 2018 was built to whatever the city had adopted then. A rebuild in 2026 is built to the 2024 codes, and some of the difference is exactly the waterproofing and backer detailing that failed the first time.

Floodplain Development and the 50 Percent Rule

The city requires a permit for all development in the FEMA floodplain under Chapter 34 of its ordinances, and its own guidance directs homeowners to call the Building Division at 281-996-3201 before any floodplain work begins.

50% Substantial damage / improvement threshold

The rule that catches people is the substantial damage and substantial improvement threshold. When the cost of repair or improvement equals or exceeds 50 percent of the building market value, the structure has to meet the same standards as new construction, which in Friendswood includes being elevated two feet above base flood elevation.

A shower is almost never 50 percent of a house on its own. It becomes a question when the shower is the last phase of a larger renovation, or when a big remediation scope gets attached to it. Ask the city where you stand before you sign, not after the invoice lands.

Why the County Line Still Matters

South of Clear Creek Galveston County portion

Served by Friendswood ISD. Of the 2,838 damaged units in Harvey, 1,246 were in Galveston County.

Your building market value for the 50 percent rule comes from whichever county appraisal district holds your account.

North of Clear Creek Harris County portion

Served by Clear Creek ISD. 1,592 damaged units were in Harris County, so the north side of the creek took more of the damage by unit count.

Clear Creek is the divider between the two halves of the city.

Friendswood · Curbless

Curbless Walk In Shower Friendswood: The Right Time to Do It Is While the Room Is Already Open

Friendswood is slab on grade at an elevation of roughly 30 feet on flat coastal terrain. Every one of the three ways to build a curbless shower on a slab applies here, and one fact changes the economics completely.

If your bathroom is being opened anyway, curbless costs less now than it will ever cost again. The demolition is already paid for, the floor is already exposed, and the waterproofing is already being replaced.

A curbless walk-in shower under construction in a Friendswood, Texas slab on grade home, showing a low profile bonded linear drain set at the entry, the waterproofing membrane extended thirty inches past the opening across the bathroom floor, preformed corners at the wall base, and slope arrows falling back into the shower. The graphic shows Clear Creek area homeowners how a flood rebuild is the cheapest moment to build a barrier free shower on an existing slab.
Linear drain at entry Membrane 30 in past opening Preformed corners

The Three Methods

You saw-cut and recess the slab so the shower pan sits 1.5 to 2 inches below the surrounding floor and the finished floor runs flush. You raise the entire bathroom floor 1.5 to 2 inches and leave the shower at slab height. Or you build a shallow ramped entry with a low-profile bonded linear drain that needs roughly 3/4 inch of assembly thickness.

2

3

Shallow ramped entry

A low-profile bonded linear drain that needs roughly 3/4 inch of assembly thickness, and triggers no concrete work at all.

Not a true wheelchair roll-in

The third one is not a true wheelchair roll-in and should never be sold as one. It is the right answer for aging in place, a shower chair, a walker or a cane, and it triggers no concrete work at all.

Why the Waterproofing Gets Bigger, Not Just Different

The dam comes out

Why the Waterproofing Gets Bigger, Not Just Different

A curb is a dam. Take it out and the wet zone has no boundary, so the bonded membrane has to run 24 to 36 inches past the opening across the bathroom floor at minimum.

In a Friendswood bathroom that already took water once, that is not a downside. Waterproofing the entire floor of the room turns a bathroom that flooded from the outside into a bathroom that can be dried and cleaned from the inside, and the incremental cost while the floor is open is small.

Curbless and Barrier-Free Specification Table

Specification Requirement Why It Matters in a Friendswood Rebuild
Minimum floor slope
1/4 in per ft to the drain
Code minimum and the number an inspector checks
Practical maximum slope
About 1/2 in per ft
Past this a shower chair rolls and bare feet feel it
Reduced slope in a roll-in area
1/8 to 3/16 in per ft where allowed
Levels the chair, drains slower, needs more air movement
Waterproofing past the opening
24 to 36 in minimum, often the full floor
Full floor is usually the better call in a flood rebuild
Low-profile bonded linear drain
About 3/4 in of assembly thickness
Versus 1-1/4 to 2 in for a traditional clamping ring bed
Slab recess for a true flush pan
1.5 to 2 in below the surrounding slab
Full depth removal and a re-poured pocket, not chipping
Clear interior for a roll-in shower
60 by 30 in minimum
Usually means taking the adjoining linen closet
Clear floor outside the entry
About 24 in
Somewhere dry to stand with no curb catching drips
Grab bar blocking
Behind the backer before waterproofing
Costs almost nothing now and means wall demo later
Bottom plate detail on slab
Treated plate and a capillary break
The detail most often skipped in a 2018 rebuild
Backer board in the wet zone
Cement or foam backer, never paper faced gypsum
The single most common failure found on opening these walls

Friendswood Homes, Neighborhoods, and the Streets We Cover

Friendswood was founded in 1895 by Quakers led by Frank Brown and Thomas Hadley Lewis, the only permanent Texas town that began as a Quaker colony. It incorporated in 1960 and grew into a suburb of about 41,300 people across 20.9 square miles.

The housing is overwhelmingly owner occupied at roughly 77 percent, with a median owner-occupied value near $420,100 and a median household income near $126,500. These are families who intend to stay, which is why the flood repair question keeps coming back around to being done right rather than done again.

Four Creeks, Not One

The city drains to four creeks and their tributaries.

Clear Creek
Mary's Creek
Cowards Creek
Chigger Creek

The Harris County Flood Warning System puts gauges on all of them, including Mary's Creek at Winding Road, Clear Creek at Country Club Drive, Clear Creek at FM 528, Cowart Creek at Baker Road and Chigger Creek at South Friendswood Drive.

The city's own drainage committee concluded that Friendswood floods catastrophically when the watershed takes 24 inches or more of rain in under two days, and that it has happened three times in forty years: Claudette in 1979, Allison in 2001, and Harvey in 2017. Roughly 300,000 acre-feet of water reached Friendswood during Harvey.

What the Housing Stock Means for Your Quote

  • Assume slab on grade across essentially the entire city, which makes the bottom plate and the capillary break the details that decide a wet wall
  • Assume the bathroom has flood history until proven otherwise if the house predates 2018, because more than a third of the housing stock was damaged in one storm
  • Assume a shallow water line rather than a deep one, because more than half of the damaged units took 24 inches or less and that is the depth that hides best
  • Assume the tile was left in place in any bathroom repaired during the 2018 contractor shortage, because removing intact tile was the first thing cut from a schedule
  • Assume the permit is a city permit regardless of which county your deed is filed in, and that the inspection has to be requested the day before
  • Assume the current codes are newer than the ones your last repair was built to, which is an advantage rather than a hassle

Walk In Shower Cost Friendswood: What These Projects Actually Run

National shower installation data puts the average near $8,204 with most homeowners spending between $4,448 and $12,373, and Houston market shower remodels have run closer to $6,900 on average with walk-in showers specifically landing between roughly $5,920 and $11,830.

None of those numbers describe a rebuild. The moment your project includes assessment, remediation or framing repair, those become their own line items and the range moves. Which is exactly why they should be their own line items on your quote instead of a padded lump sum.

Labor is 40 to 60 percent of a Houston shower project. Plumbers run roughly $40 to $150 per hour in this market, tile installers $30 to $100, and electricians $50 to $130, which is why a company that sends the same certified crew every day prices differently than one that assembles a crew per job.

Acrylic and Solid Surface Versus Tile in a Flood-Rebuilt Friendswood Bathroom

This is where a Friendswood budget gets decided, and the flood history changes the calculus in a way it does not in a house that never took water.

A material comparison layout for Friendswood, Texas bathroom projects showing a compression molded solid surface shower panel, a cast acrylic wall panel, 12 by 24 porcelain tile with grout joints, and a large format porcelain slab arranged on a table beside a grout sealer and a squeegee. The comparison helps Clear Creek area homeowners weigh maintenance, installed cost, inspectability and one day install feasibility when rebuilding a shower in a home that took water in Harvey.

Solid Surface and Cast Acrylic

One-piece or panelized walls with no grout joints anywhere. Nothing to seal, nothing to scrub, and a wall assembly that goes in inside a single day because it is manufactured before it arrives rather than assembled on your studs.

In a rebuild there is a second advantage that people underrate. Fewer joints means fewer places for a slow failure to start, and a panel system comes off a wall in a way that lets somebody look behind it in ten years without destroying the room.

Porcelain Tile

The default for a custom look, and the only surface that gives you a continuous floor plane running from inside the shower out into the bathroom with no material change at the opening. Porcelain absorbs less than half a percent water by weight, which is the right property for a coastal Texas bathroom.

Tile is not the problem in a flood-rebuilt bathroom. What is behind tile is the problem. Tile over correct backer over a correct bonded membrane is an excellent assembly. Tile over paper-faced gypsum, which is what a lot of fast 2018 repairs used, is the assembly this whole page is about.

Natural Stone

Marble and limestone are beautiful and porous. Expect an impregnating sealer on a schedule, and expect honed marble to etch anywhere an acidic cleaner touches it. It is a design decision with a maintenance contract attached, and it should be made with that written down.

The Questions That Separate Them

Questions to Ask Before You Sign With Any Walk In Shower Company

Three companies will quote your bathroom and the numbers will be thousands apart. In Friendswood the spread is almost never the tile selection. It is whether anybody is opening the wall and what happens when they do.

Question 01

Will you take moisture readings before you quote, and will you write them down?

The answer you want

A company that quotes a flood-history bathroom without touching a meter is quoting a guess

Question 02

What backer are you putting behind the tile or panel?

The answer you want

Cement or foam board in the wet zone. If the answer is any form of paper faced gypsum, stop the conversation

Question 03

What happens contractually if you open the wall and find mold?

The answer you want

You want a named threshold, a licensed remediator, and a written change order you approve first

Question 04

How far past the opening does the waterproofing run on a curbless build?

The answer you want

Anything under 24 inches is a short answer to the wrong question

Question 05

Are the installers your W2 employees?

The answer you want

A name and a certification, not a crew that changes between the estimate and the install

Question 06

Have you pulled a permit with the City of Friendswood before?

The answer you want

The city permits both counties from one counter and inspections have to be requested the day prior

Question 07

Is my price flat and written before demolition?

The answer you want

The only correct answer on a change is a written change order you approve first

Question 08

Does the warranty transfer to the next owner?

The answer you want

In a city with disclosure history attached to flood repairs, a transferable warranty is worth real money

This page ranks five: Cascade Showerworks, Simplicity Bath & Shower, Re-Bath Houston, Luxury Bath of Houston and EZ Bath. Cascade publishes the ranking and is first on it, measured against shower specialization, installer model, waterproofing system, timeline, pricing transparency, warranty, local accountability and public rating. Every criterion is printed near the top of this page so you can score them yourself against any other company you are considering.

Worried is the wrong word. Curious is the right one. More than half the damaged units in the city took 24 inches of water or less, which is the exact depth that wets a tub apron, a bottom plate and the base of a wet wall without ever touching the visible tile. Tap the tile, press the low wall, check the caulk at the tub apron, and smell the room after it has been closed. If any of those come back odd, get readings before you get quotes.

For most real shower work, yes, and it comes from the City of Friendswood Community Development office at 910 S. Friendswood Drive regardless of whether your house is on the Galveston County or the Harris County side. Plan review averages five to seven working days and inspections have to be requested by calling 281-996-3201 before 5 pm the day prior. If any part of the work is in the FEMA floodplain, a floodplain development permit under Chapter 34 comes first.

When the cost of repair or improvement to a structure equals or exceeds 50 percent of the building market value, Friendswood requires it to meet the same standards as new construction, including elevation two feet above base flood elevation. A shower rebuild alone almost never gets there. It becomes a question when the shower is one phase of a larger renovation, or when a large remediation scope attaches to it. Ask the city before you sign.

The EPA states that materials dried within 24 to 48 hours of getting wet will in most cases not grow mold. A stud bay behind a tile surround has tile on one face and gypsum on the other, no airflow path, and effectively no way to hit that window without being opened. That is the mechanism behind almost every bathroom on this page. It is also why the room that looked fine in 2018 is the room worth checking in 2026.

Under Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1958, mold remediation on a project of 25 contiguous square feet or more requires a licensed mold remediator, with limited exemptions for owners and tenants working on their own property. A licensed remediator must give the property owner a certificate of mold remediation within 10 days of completing the work, and a seller has to disclose each certificate issued for the property in the five years preceding a sale.

Only your carrier can answer that, and any contractor who tells you otherwise at an estimate is describing something they do not control. What is worth knowing going in: basic homeowner policies do not cover flood damage, flood is a separate policy with a 30 day waiting period, and of the roughly 3,000 Friendswood homes reported flooded in Harvey about 2,000 sat outside designated flood zones. Document the room with photos and measurements before anything is demolished.

National shower installation averages near $8,204 with most projects between $4,448 and $12,373, and Houston market walk-in showers have run roughly $5,920 to $11,830. Cascade publishes system pricing from $9,200 to $21,900 by series. A rebuild adds its own lines: roughly $450 to $800 for an independent assessment, $10 to $30 per square foot for remediation, $800 to $3,500 for framing and backer replacement, and $600 to $6,000 for curbless depending on method.

Yes, by one of three methods: saw-cut and recess the slab for a true flush floor, raise the whole bathroom floor 1.5 to 2 inches and keep the shower low, or build a shallow ramped entry with a low-profile bonded linear drain. If the room is already being opened for a rebuild, this is the cheapest moment it will ever be, because the demolition and the waterproofing are already in the scope.

A Cascade shower system install is a one-day job, roughly 7:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening, with the shower usable after the silicone cures overnight. A rebuild that includes assessment, remediation, drying and framing repair does not compress into that, and no company should promise that it does. Add city plan review of five to seven working days and inspections that have to be requested the day before.
